Bagrateeds

Armenian Bagrateeds, Bagratuni - an ancient influential princely family in Armenia. The first data about Bagrateeds concerned to the I century B.C. Under arabs, in VIII-IX centuries, Bagrateeds gradually seized mostly Armenia. A nucleus of their possession became Shirak. Bagrateeds got a post of "prince of pronces" of Armenia and headed a struggle against arabs for the independence of Armenia. In 886 year Ashot I Bagrateed became a king. In 961 year Ani became the capital of the empire. Imperial dynasty of Bafrateeds reached its maximum bloom in the 2nd part of X - the beginning of XI centuries under Ashot III, Smbat II and Gagik I. In 1045 after capture of Armenia by Byzantium the Bagrateeds existence stopped.

  • Rights defenders give number of kidnapped people in Chechnya

    At least 80 residents of Chechnya have been kidnapped after a car with a DUSTUM license plate was set on fire; volunteers have identified the names of a number of them. In the village of Starye Atagi, Urus-Martan District, about 50 members of the Saif-Islam Elmurzaev family, suspected of setting the above car on fire, have been kidnapped; and about 30 people have been kidnapped in the Shali District, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)* has reported.

  • Rights defenders announce Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev as political prisoners

    The case against Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev is politically motivated, human rights defenders have stated. They recognized Rizvanov and Tambiev as political prisoners, demanding that the criminal prosecution of those convicted on charges of financing terrorism be stopped and that they be released, as well as an inquiry into the torture of Kemal Tambiev.
