Nekrasovtsy

Old Believers (without a priest), descendants of the Don cossacks, led by ataman Ignat Nekras (Nekrasov) who ran from prosecutions of the government to Turkey. There they have partly settled in Dobrudja, partly in Asia Minor. In conditions of more than 250-years of an ethnic environment alient to them the community of Nekrasovtsy turned into a special ethno-confessional group. Nekrasovtsy had not given in to process of assimilation. In 1962 the most part of Nekrasovtsy re-emigrated back home and settled in Stavropol territory. In conditions of new economic and social-cultural system an evolution of Nekrasovs' spiritual shape occured. Researchers fix democratization of a family patriarchal structure and of traditional family relations.

  • Rights defenders give number of kidnapped people in Chechnya

    At least 80 residents of Chechnya have been kidnapped after a car with a DUSTUM license plate was set on fire; volunteers have identified the names of a number of them. In the village of Starye Atagi, Urus-Martan District, about 50 members of the Saif-Islam Elmurzaev family, suspected of setting the above car on fire, have been kidnapped; and about 30 people have been kidnapped in the Shali District, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)* has reported.

  • Rights defenders announce Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev as political prisoners

    The case against Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev is politically motivated, human rights defenders have stated. They recognized Rizvanov and Tambiev as political prisoners, demanding that the criminal prosecution of those convicted on charges of financing terrorism be stopped and that they be released, as well as an inquiry into the torture of Kemal Tambiev.
