Agreements on preservation of rare species of animals of Northern Caucasus signed at "Sochi-2017" Forum

At the forum "Sochi-2017", the NGO "Centre for the Caucasus Nature" and the regions of the south of Russia have signed agreements on cooperation for preservation of the Persian leopard, European bison, and Caspian seal.

The project for the preservation of the Persian leopard population provides for the creation of new animal release areas and transit corridors between them. At present, only three leopards live in the wild nature in the territory of Northern   Caucasus, and their number in the world is 450 individuals, the website "Centre for the Caucasus Nature" reports.

As far as the European bison is concerned, its population in the wild nature of Northern Caucasus is only 103 animals, and the "Centre for the Caucasus Nature" set itself a key goal to bring the numbers up to at least 400 animals. For this goal, it is planned to expand the range of bison and develop infrastructure of animal nurseries.

The project for the preservation of the Caspian seal, the population of which in its natural habitat is not known, involves the creation of new animals release areas, bringing of new animals to the centre and developing of a long-term mechanism for the implementation of the programme for reintroduction of animals.
