On May 8-14, 2017, four persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of May 8-14, 2017, four persons fell victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Of them, three were killed, and one person was wounded. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

All three deceased persons were suspected members of the armed underground: two in Ingushetia and one in Dagestan.

Attacks on law enforcers

At about 1:00 p.m. of May 12, a checkpoint of the road-and-patrol service (known as DPS) was attacked in Malgobek, Ingushetia. A policeman was wounded, and two attackers were killed. No civilians suffered. One of the attackers has been preliminary identified as Magomed Bekbuzarov, a 29-year-old resident of the Malgobek District, who was wanted for involvement in an April attack on a police patrol car in Malgobek. The second killed suspect has been identified as Adam Sultanovich Magmadov, a 34-year-old native of the city of Grozny of the Chechen Republic, who was earlier put on the wanted list on suspicion of committing crimes of a terrorist nature. At the place of the incident, law enforcers seized two submachine guns, an improvised explosive device (IED) with destructive elements, and a large number of cartridges. The responsibility for the attack on the DPS checkpoint in Malgobek was claimed by the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) banned in Russia by court.

On May 14, in the suburbs of Makhachkala, policemen tried to stop a car to check the driver's documents. The man in the car opened fire from a pistol at the policemen. In the course of the subsequent shootout, the attacker was killed. No policemen or civilians suffered in the shootout. The victim has been preliminary identified as a member of the "Makhachkala" subversive and terrorist grouping.

Detentions

On May 10, a 34-year-old resident of Derbent, suspected of involvement in the illegal armed formation (IAF) known as the "Southern Grouping", was detained. According to investigators, in the period from May 2016 to May 2017, the suspect took part in the IAF operating in the southern regions of Dagestan.

On May 11, the Investigating Department for Dagestan of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) reported on taking into custody two residents of Dagestan who had been trained by militants in the territory of the Karabudakhkent District. Both suspects were members of a grouping of militants led by Magomed Khalimbekov. At a forest camp in the territory of the Karabudakhkent District, they were trained to handle weapons and explosive devices.
