Dagestani woman convicted for involvement in bride abduction

The court has sentenced a female resident of a village in the Levashin District to three years of conditional imprisonment, having found her guilty of detaining her brother's bride, whom he forcibly took away from her home.

The court has established that in September, a relative of a woman from the village of Tagzirkent brought to her a daughter of his fellow villagers, whom he forcibly took away from her home aiming to marry her. At the request of her relative, the woman forcibly kept the kidnapped girl in her house, watched her so that she would not run away until her parents' consent to the marriage was obtained, the court has ruled. However, two days later, the abducted girl fled from her and turned for help.

The Levashin District Court found the Tagzirkent woman-villager guilty under the article on illegal imprisonment and sentenced her to three years of conditional imprisonment with a probation period of 1.5 year, the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office said in its website. The court is also considering a criminal case against the man accused of abducting the bride, says the website.

Let us note here that the article on abduction provide for up to five years in prison.
