Convict for Basaev's raid on Dagestan perishes in Makhachkala SIZO

Zagir Yakubov, a native of the Stavropol Territory, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison as a participant in the attack of Shamil Basaev's and Khattab's grouping on Dagestan in 1999, has committed suicide.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the case of natives of Stavropol, Rasul Mailubaev and Zagir Yakubov, accused as attackers of the grouping headed by Basaev and Khattab on Dagestan in 1999, was brought to court in October 2021. They were sentenced in January 2023, both – both to 14 years of high-security prison regime each.

On August 7, 1999, more than a thousand armed militants led by Shamil Basaev and Jordanian Amir Khattab entered the territory of Dagestan from Chechnya. Fighting continued in the republic for more than a month' and on September 15, 1999, Igor Sergeev, the then Russian Defence Minister, reported that the territory of Dagestan was completely liberated from the attackers.

According to Shamil Khadulaev, a deputy chairman of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of Dagestan, who has written in his Telegram channel, Yakubov committed suicide two days before being transferred to the colony.

Khadulaev's post contains a photo of the object that, according to the official version, Yakubov used to commit suicide. Some commentators have expressed their bewilderment that such an object, despite the strict rules of the SIZO (pre-trial prison), was at the detainee's disposal.
