Armenian MPs call for stronger control over 102nd base

The Russian military base poses a serious threat to residents of Gyumri, the Armenian MPs Martun Grigoryan and Zaruhi Postanjyan believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 1 a contract serviceman of the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri tried to break into an apartment of local residents. Armenian law enforcers are finding out whether the incident contained attributes of a crime.

The 102nd military base stationed in Gyumri has repeatedly got into the criminal chronicles. The most resonant incident was the mass killing of the members of Avetisyan family, committed at night on January 12, 2015. The defendant in the case is a Russian conscript Valery Permyakov.

The 102nd Russian military base in Armenia has serious problems with discipline, said Martun Grigoryan, an MP from the "Prosperous Armenia" Party.

"In Gyumri, incidents with drunken soldiers occur regularly; and this is a serious threat to citizens," Martun Grigoryan said today at a briefing at the Armenian Parliament.

It is necessary to revise the conditions for the presence of the military base in Gyumri, said Zaruhi Postanjyan, the head of the "Heritage" faction.

To do so, said the MP, "We need to show the political will and desire." Moreover, a criminal case should be instituted on the recent incident in Gyumri, said the MP.
