Defence Minister of Georgia promises to resume conscription

Mandatory conscription to the Georgian Army will be resumed in a new form, said Levan Izoriya, the head of the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this April Tinatin Khidasheli, Levan Izoriya's predecessor in the post, promised to cancel the mandatory military draft in Georgia in 2017. According to her version, in that way the army should pass entirely over to contract service.

Now, according to Izoriya, the monthly salary of recruits will be increased up to 50 laris (about 20 US dollars); and they will be able to use their day-offs, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

"Recruits will undergo a full-fledged basic training... The updated mandatory military service will ensure cost saving, support of the professional component with the recruitment and training more staff," the "Georgia-Online" quotes Minister Izoriya as saying.
