Chechen Ministry of Education: wearing hijabs for schoolgirls is not mandatory

Chechen schoolgirls and female students are not required to wear hijabs; however, headscarves are a part of the uniform. This was announced by an official of the Chechen Ministry of Education.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 24, Olga Vasilieva, the Russian Minister of Education and Science, stated that at Russian schools, pupils should not emphasize attributes of their religion. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has accused Olga Vasilieva of imposing on the public her personal opinion and organizing a war against hijabs. The Chechen Parliament has begun preparation of the law, which will officially allow wearing religious attributes in schools.

Starting from September 1, 2016, all schools of Grozny introduced a common uniform for children. This was reported to the "Caucasian Knot" by residents of the Chechen Republic. According to them, the uniform for schoolgirls included a "red headscarf."

Chechen schoolgirls and female students are not required to wear hijabs; however, headscarves are a mandatory attribute for their uniforms. This was explained to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by an official from the Ministry of Education and Science for the Chechen Republic.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Larissa, a principal of a school in Grozny, that wearing of hijabs is mandatory only for female students of religious educational institutions.
