ECtHR accepts Meliya's complaint for consideration

Nika Meliya, the head of the Georgian oppositional party "United National Movement" (UNM) has complained to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) about the violation of his rights during his detention in February, the Court has promptly accepted the complaint for consideration.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 16, the Georgian Parliament deprived Meliya of his parliamentary immunity; and on February 23, law enforcers conducted a special operation in Tbilisi to detain him.

The ECtHR has accepted Nika Meliya's complaint for consideration, his advocate, Giorgi Kondakhashvili, said on May 12. He recalled that Meliya appealed to the ECtHR regarding the violation of his rights under the Articles "The person's right to liberty and security" and "Limits on the use of restrictions on rights", the "Sputnik-Georgia" reports.

At the same time, Mr Kondakhashvili has noted that the ECtHR had accepted the complaint within the record short time. The Meliya's defence went to the ECtHR a few days after his arrest; and already on April 21, questions were sent to the Georgian government.
