Activists demand to take all pupils out of Ninotsminda orphanage

At the rally held in front of the Georgian Parliament, NGO activists demanded to let the Ombudsperson into the boarding school in Ninotsminda and to remove all the pupils from there. In his turn, the Church spokesman has stated that the Patriarchy is not going to close the boarding school.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the court had ruled to distribute all the Saint Nino boarding school pupils among families and family-type shelters. Several former pupils have reported that after they gave testimonies to investigators, they began receiving threats and were forced to leave their current educational establishments.

On June 13, activists of 40 NGOs protested against authorities' inaction in relation to the Ninotsminda boarding school. By peaceful protests, they intend to achieve the closure of the boarding school and other similar shelters in Georgia, Nika Parulava, an activist the "Shame" movement, has stated.

In parallel, an action of the "Union of Orthodox Parents" was held near the parliament in support of the priest Spiridon, who runs the boarding school in Ninotsminda.

The issue of closing the boarding school is out of thee agenda, despite the fact that the court has ruled to remove all the pupils from the boarding school, Andriya Djagmaidze, the head of the public relations division of the Patriarchate, has stated.

It is necessary to make sure that children's rights are fully protected, said Karl Hartzel, the EU Ambassador.
