In Kabardino-Balkaria, activists call on Putin to stand up for Karagulov

In their appeal to the Russian President, authors note that Khusein Karagulov, a scientist from Kabardino-Balkaria, was unjustifiably accused of the industrial production of drugs, whereas the purpose of his development was research activities. The activists ask Vladimir Putin to intervene in the situation.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 8, 2020, the trial in a case against Khusein Karagulov began in the Nalchik City Court. Khusein Karagulov is accused of having been engaged in the production of the substance “Tambuil-extract” on the basis of medicinal mud without a licence. The scientist does not admit his guilt and claims that officials are fulfilling someone’s order.

Today, a letter in defence of Khusein Karagulov has been sent to the name of the Russian President and the Prime Minister of Russia. The appeal has been signed by Valery Khatazhukov, the head of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) of Kabardino-Balkaria, Zhantemir Gubachikov, Ombudsman for the Protection of the Rights of Entrepreneurs, Zhelyabi Kalmykov, the head of the Union of Adyg Public Organizations, and Khakim Kuchmezov, the leader of the local branch of the “Yabloko” Party.

“We draw your attention to the legal lawlessness against Khusein Gamelovich Karagulov, a scientist from Kabardino-Balkaria. Please take measures to stop the lawlessness,” the appeal says.

Khusein Karagulov developed “about a hundred formulations of new modern innovative medicines” from the Tambukan mud, but “instead of supporting such a valuable scientist, officials create obstacles for him, interfere with his work, and try to stop his activities,” the activists claim in their appeal.
