National Security Service of Armenia warns opposition against storming parliament

The opposition is preparing to storm the parliament building, the National Security Service of Armenia has announced, warning protesters of criminal liability. The parliament building is under heavy police protection.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that since April 25, the opposition has been holding protests in Armenia demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan after he announced his readiness to “lower the bar” on the status of Nagorno-Karabakh. Today, protesters have blocked Kiev Bridge in Yerevan, and 40 activists were detained for failure to obey the police.

“Organizers of a rally in Yerevan intend to provoke illegal actions” during a regular session of the parliament and “seize the building,” the National Security Service (NSS) has announced. This will lead to destabilization of internal security, the NSS notes.

Ishkhan Sagatelyan, one of the organizers of the protests, the deputy speaker of the parliament from the “Hayastan” faction, points out that the today’s actions are especially important, “because Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will be in the parliament.”

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that the police act aggressively while detaining protesters in Armenia, and a number of activists have been injured.
