Kondratyev named the timeframe for the expansion of the landfill in Novorossiysk

By the end of 2025, two new waste disposal sites will be built at the solid municipal waste landfill in Novorossiysk, as the landfill's current capacity has been exhausted, the governor said.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" wrote, fires regularly occur at the landfill near Mount Shchelba in Novorossiysk, causing city residents to complain of acrid smoke. City residents have repeatedly called for the landfill to be closed, but a tender for its reconstruction was announced in the spring, and the landfill's operating life was extended by two years. Social media users were outraged by the plans to reconstruct the landfill. Another fire in the spring of 2025 lasted more than a month, from March 13 to April 17, after which Rosprirodnadzor initiated an administrative case against the owner of the landfill.

The authorities of the Krasnodar Territory commented today on the reconstruction work of the landfill in Novorossiysk, for which 1.2 billion rubles have been allocated. The work, which began in May, will be completed by the end of 2025, the press service of the Krasnodar Territory administration reported.

The current capacity of the landfill has been exhausted, the reconstruction consists of expanding its territory, confirmed the vice-governor of Kuban, Yevgeny Pergun, at a meeting with the municipality's activists. “It is planned to create a composting complex and modernize the sorting facilities. (...) In addition, the landfill area is being expanded - this is necessary for the reclamation of the main section," Interfax-Yug quotes the official as saying.

It is planned to build two new sections at the landfill for the disposal of 225 thousand tons of waste, as well as a composting section with a capacity of 70 thousand tons per year. According to the authorities, the sorting complex at the landfill will be modernized.

The governor of the region, Veniamin Kondratyev, who was also present at the meeting, called the expansion of the landfill in Novorossiysk a necessity. "More than 6.5 million people live in the Krasnodar region, and another 20 million come here on holiday. All this seriously affects the increase in waste volumes, and the existing landfills in the region cannot cope with it," he said.

The landfill in the village of Borisovka was organized in 2013, it is the only legalized facility for the placement of waste from Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik. The capacity of the facility is 160 thousand tons of waste per year, however, according to the territorial scheme for handling solid municipal waste, about 230 thousand tons of waste are generated in Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik annually. In fact, the landfill accepts a significantly larger volume of garbage, and under such conditions, the landfill has prematurely "exhausted itself", said in January 2024 the head of the working group on ecology at the Council for the Development of Civil Society under the Governor of Kuban Yevgeny Vitishko.
