Azerbaijani NGOs create committee in defence of civil society

On Friday, June 12, over 50 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) of Azerbaijan announced creation of the "Committee in Defence of Civil Society". The aim of the Committee is to oppose adoption of amendments to the legislation, restricting the activities of NGOs.

The amendments will be discussed in the parliament of Azerbaijan on June 19. The coalition of NGOs has formed a working group for drafting a particular action plan how not to admit adoption of the amendments. One of the protest actions will be held on June 19 in front of the parliament, when the National Assembly will discuss the amendments.

Besides, it is assumed to send appeals to the country's president and parliament stating the antidemocratic character of the amendments and hold a roundtable with participation of representatives of civil society, government, international organizations and diplomatic corps.
