Video surveillance will help maintaining order in Chechen capital

In the nearest two weeks, all the administrative buildings, commercial sites and other throngs of citizens in Grozny will be equipped with video surveillance cameras.

In the opinion of city Mayoralty bosses, these measures should improve safety and reduce the count of administrative offences.

According to decision of the Mayoralty, before August 10, video cameras shall be installed on all the objects of public health, education, culture and other places, where people are used to crowd together. Besides, video surveillance cameras should appear on all commercial objects.

Some residents of the Chechen capital see quite a different background of the decision. In their opinion, a commercial element should be sought here.

"Whatever our city bureaucrats say, citizens' safety is the last point in their agenda," said a Grozny resident named Beksolt on this occasion.

He continued: "Most likely, some businessman, probably from among close friends of city bosses, wants to make business here based on these video cameras. This is why the authorities have rushed installing them. Here, we have almost one militiaman and one soldier per citizen; now, cameras will also watch people. Soon they'll fix these cameras in every flat."

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan
