Court refuses to return Politkovskaya's murder case to prosecutor's office

Today, Moscow's military district court has dismissed the petition of relatives of Anna Politkovskaya to return the case of murder of the journalist to the prosecutor' s office.

For reference, representatives of the journalist's family, during the first hearing after the setting aside of the non-guilty verdict on August 5, asked the Moscow's military district court to return the case of murder of the "Novaya Gazeta" observer to the prosecutor's office. The state prosecution moved the same request, the defendants' lawyers supported the petition. The preliminary hearings took place in camera.

The next court hearing on the case is appointed on September 7, reports "Gazeta.Ru".

This criminal file contains a lot of documents testifying to the existence of various theories of Anna Politkovskaya's murder, however, most of them have not even been checked by the investigation. It is senseless to reconsider the case in this state and such proof, because any unbiased jury would make a non-guilty  verdict again, cites "Radio Liberty" the opinion of the victims.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
