Beslan mothers sent a letter to Russian President asking to consider the law on status of terror act victims

On August 17, the letter of Beslan mothers, which the members of the all-Russian NGO "Voice of Beslan" could not hand over to Dmitri Medvedev in North Ossetia, was sent to President's administration in Moscow. In the document, relatives of the victims of the terror act in Beslan ask the country leader to receive them and discuss the course of investigation of the terror act and the law on the status of the victims of terror acts.

In the opinion of Beslan mothers, such law is a must: children cannot recover from the tragedy; their health worsens all the time; however, there is no money for proper treatment.

Besides, the letter notes that none of the victims' parents knows anything about the course of the investigation. All their requests are answered as follows: "You'll know all the details at the trial after investigation."

The document further runs that "the former leadership of the country failed to solve the problems, which had arisen after the terror act," therefore, the victims have announced a start of the support action "For President's meeting with victims of Beslan tragedy". They also urge "everybody to send letters to the President asking him to receive the delegation of Beslan victims."

"We are sure that not by disregard, but through efficient sympathy, objective investigation, federal help in the form of targeted programmes and status of terror act victims, the state can help in curing the wounds of the Beslan tragedy and other terror acts," says the letter.

It was signed by 254 victims and former hostages of the Beslan school.

On August 8, 2009, during Dmitri Medvedev's visit to North Ossetia, mothers made an attempt to hand the letter over to the President, but his securities stopped the attempt, and one of the bodyguards slapped Ella Kesaeva, leader of the "Voice of Beslan" across her face.

Oleg Kusov, the Radio Liberty correspondent, who made a visit to North Ossetia, has reported that, under Ella Kesaeva's description, local securities in civilian clothes, not the workers of the Federal Security Service, as supposed earlier, did not let to hand the letter over to the President.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan

Ayats (verses) of the Koran, references to which were left by attackers at a synagogue in Derbent, are interpreted by the extremists to justify their confrontation with Jews and Christians, Leonid Syukiyainen and Dmitry Mikulsky point out. The experts suggest that the date of the attack on the Orthodox temple was chosen by the militants because of the Christian holiday celebrated on that day.
