Baku police denies detention of oppositional picketers
Razu Nurullayev, deputy chairman of the Party of the People's Front of Azerbaijan (PPFA), reports detention of about 80 persons during today's picket organized in Baku by oppositionists from the block "Freedom". He noted that the detainees were brought to the Sabail District police stations. However, according to Kyamil Velishev, deputy head of the police department of this district, there were no detainees.
"The action was stopped because it was not sanctioned. Its participants were not detained but removed away from the territory," he said.
However, one of the detainees - a youth activist Natig Adilov - managed to report from Station 8 of the Sabail District Police Department that there were 50 detainees there.
The on duty policeman at the station has reported detention of 30 persons.
Earlier, it was reported that today in Baku the police hampered activists of the oppositional block "Azadlyg" (Freedom) to hold a picket in front of the building of the Baku Mayoralty with a demand of the freedom of assembly.
