Police in Baku suppresses action of protest by "Musavat" party
The Azeri police in Baku has dispersed today an action of protest by the "Musavat" party which demanded freedom of assembly, provision of democratic parliamentary election to be held in autumn and consideration of Azerbaijan interests at the negotiations on the Karabakh conflict.
The policemen did not allow the "Musavat" representatives to gather near the metro station and head for the Gussein Dzhavid park where they planned their action. The opposition members gathering near the metro station were detained and put into the buses taken off from the city routes especially for the purpose. The opposition members were chanting the slogans "Freedom!", "Free elections!", "Democracy!"
"We are 18 in the bus. We do not know where we are being taken. We are now passing by the Yasamal cemetery", said Arif Gadzhily, head of the party central office, by telephone to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to "Musavat" party activists, about 40 people were detained.
