Rally in memory of journalist Anna Politkovskaya held in Moscow

The event marking the 4th anniversary of the murder of the observer of the "Novaya Gazeta" was held in Chistoprudny Boulevard in Moscow.

The rally began at about 4 p.m. Some 200 persons gathered under the motto: "Customer and gunmen are still at large".

From early morning today Muscovites are bringing flowers to the house where Anna Politkovskaya lived; and in the evening well-known politicians, activists and public figures plan to come there, the "Echo Mosvky" Radio reports.

Let us remind you that Anna Politkovskaya was gunned down on October 7, 2006, in the entrance of the house in Lesnaya Street in central Moscow, where she rented her apartment.

At the rally in Moscow her friends and colleagues offered to name a street in Moscow in Politkovskaya's honour.

"Many European capitals have streets named in her honour. Next year, we'll mark five years after her murder; and under all the laws it's possible to name a street in Anna's honour and erect a monument not in the cemetery," Oleg Khlebnikov, deputy editor-in-chief of the "Novaya Gazeta", said to the rally and offered to rename Lesnaya Street into Anna Politkovskaya Street.

The event was attended by politicians Boris Nemtsov and Garry Kasparov, the editor-in-chief of the "Novaya Gazeta" Dmitri Muratov, actor Alexander Filippenko, human rights activist Sergei Kovalyov and actress Leah Akhedzhakova, the RIA "Novosti" reports.
