Former Deputy Mayor of Astrakhan convicted for death of 5 persons

They perished in a collapsed building of a hostel, where they had been illegally placed two years before the tragedy, runs the verdict.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the criminal case against Viktor Kuznetsov, former deputy mayor for construction and the chairman of the committee for construction of the city administration, was initiated after the death of five persons during the collapse of a hostel in Astrakhan in July 2009. The property worth over 38 million roubles was also ruined.

At today's court session, Viktor Kuznetsov was found guilty of abuse of office and sentenced to 2.5 years of colony-settlement with a ban for 2 years to take positions in state bodies, said an employee of the Kirov District Court of Astrakhan.

As established by the investigation, in 2006-2007 Kuznetsov sanctioned resettlement of several families under housing change contracts from the municipal flats found unfit for residence, to the hostel in Savushkin Street in Astrakhan.

For this purpose the hostel was illegally reconstructed (non-residential premises were converted into residential ones without project documentation and permits), said an official from the Regional Prosecutor's Office.
