Interregional seminar "Facilitating Social Partnership in North Caucasus"

The fourth and the last seminar in the series of interregional seminars under the common title "Facilitating Social Partnership in North Caucasus" took place at the Djeyrakh sanatorium in the Republic of Ingushetia on December 18-20, 2003. The seminar was organized by the Saint Petersburg Center "Strategy" and the Moscow Helsinki Group with the participation of the Ingush President's staff.

The series is aimed at grounding leaders of North Caucasian NGOs in the foundations of NGO management, in methods and technologies of social partnership and cooperation with representatives of local and regional authorities. The second aim of the project is to determine scope for application of the experience in social partnership accumulated in the other regions of Russia, with national and cultural features of the North Caucasian republics being taken into consideration.

Earlier two seminars in Pyatigorsk (November 2002 and April 2003) and one seminar in Makhachkala (May 2003) were arranged within the series. Representative of regional and local executive authorities, commissioners for human rights, NGO leaders, scientists and teachers from Ingushetia, North Osetia - Alania, Chechnya, Stavropol Territory, Moscow and Saint Petersburg were invited to take part in the seminar in Djeyrakh. Altogether 30 people participated in the it.

Presentations on the themes of social partnership and NGO management, round table discussions, as well as the gaming "Preparation to a Civil Forum in a Mountainous Republic" were parts of the seminar.

    The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found that the Russian authorities violated the article on the prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment in relation to Ingush activist Zarifa Sautieva.   • Court dismisses appeal of activist Melikhova against fine for her verse

    A court dismissed all the arguments of the defence and upheld the decision to fine Marina Melikhova, an activist from Kuban, whose verse the law enforcement bodies recognized as discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. Marina Melikhova, who does not have the money to pay the fine, intends to file an appeal against the court’s decision.

  • Two natives of Northern Caucasus injured in shootout near “Wildberries” office in Moscow

    A shootout took place near an office of the “Wildberries” Company in the centre of Moscow. As a result, at least one person has been killed and several others have been wounded, sources report. Among the victims have been Abubakar Mestoev and Umar Chichaev, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters from Northern Caucasus, reports Shamil Khadulaev, the chair of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of Dagestan.

  • In Volgograd, court recognizes absence of HIV therapy in prison hospital

    The Central District Court of Volgograd awarded prisoner Ruslan Mitrofan compensation in the amount of 1000 roubles, recognizing that the administration of a prison hospital in Volgograd violated the prisoner’s right to receive medical care by not providing him with an HIV medicine. Meanwhile, Ruslan Mitrofan requested the compensation in the amount of 100,000 roubles.
