New IDs have maximum protection, Georgian Ministry of Justice asserts

The maximum protection level of a new generation identity card – ID card – is provided, in particular, by the code and password known only to the ID's owner. This was reported by Valery Tkeshelashvili, a staff member of the service for the technologies and management of the civil registry of the Georgian Ministry of Justice.

The new ID card represents a plastic card with electronic signature certificate. In accordance with the current legislation, such documents will have legal force.

With the ID card by means of the Internet the citizens will be able to obtain a range of services, including signing of electronic documents, registration of birth, registration of organizations, Internet banking and payment of fees in the subway and buses.

"The services provided by the ID card of new generation save time, efforts and nerves. At present, when the issue of identity card has already been started, we hold meetings with companies to introduce new technologies, so much, it won't demand a lot of money," said Valery Tkeshelashvili.

The ID card will be available within 10 days after the application. It costs about 30 laris (about 18.2 US dollars). In case of accelerated issue its cost ranges from 40 to 65 laris (24.2-39.4 US dollars) depending on the timing. Free issue of ID cards is available only for socially vulnerable groups of population participating in the special programme.

The new ID cards will operate in Georgia along with the old ones, and their replacement is not required. A citizen must get a new ID card if the old one has been damaged, lost or the changes in the citizen's personal data have been registered.
