Day of United Actions Against War in Chechnya
On December 11, it will be 9 years since the "restoration of constitutional order" began in Chechnya. Russian activists of the antiwar movement declared Day of United Actions Against War in Chechnya to commemorate this tragic date.
In Moscow the Committee for Antiwar Actions will hold an action of protest on Pushkinskaya Square from 17:30 to 19:00 Moscow time. In Yekaterinburg a picket will be held by the Memorial Society at the monument to the founders of the city from 14:00 to 15:00 Moscow time.
The human rights organization "Soldier's Mothers of Saint Petersburg" will hold a picket "with flowers and candles" at the corner of Nevsky Avenue and Malaya Konyushennaya Street from 17:00 to 20:00 Moscow time, the co-chairwoman of the organization, Ella Polyakova, informed.
In Boston, the U.S., the Committee Against Ethnic Cleansing will hold an antiwar picket with the distribution of information materials, reported coordinator of the committee Victoria Poupko. A series of newspaper articles, TV and radio appearances are being prepared.
On the initiative of Elena Bonner, widow of Academician Andrey Sakharov, organizers of Day of United Actions have called upon all those who are against the war to "turn off the light in their houses at 18:00 Moscow time on December 11 and light out candles as a token of remembrance and protest so that they can be seen when looking at the windows from the streets." Victoria Poupko will appear on Boston Television on December 10, and she is going to offer all Americans to turn of the light in their houses at 18:00 on December 11 and light out candles.
