Shein's supporters prepare referendum on trust to Mayor of Astrakhan

Supporters of Oleg Shein, an ex-candidate for the post of Astrakhan Mayor, began to form an initiative group for holding a city-wide referendum on the trust to the Mayor, said Sergey Mironov, the leader of the "Spravedlivaya Rossiya" (Fair Russia) Party.

Mr Mironov moved the initiative of holding a referendum on confidence to the incumbent Mayor of Astrakhan Mikhail Stolyarov at the sitting of the Astrakhan Regional Duma on April 13.

Also, the leader of the party announced the idea of a referendum at a rally in Astrakhan. In his opinion, a referendum should consider the issue of trust to the official winner of the election of the Mayor Mikhail Stolyarov, the "Vesti FM" reports.

If the townspeople fail to support the elected Mayor Mikhail Stolyarov, the party activists say, it will make the basis for his early resignation, the Russian News Service reports.

The Governor of the Astrakhan Region Alexander Zhilkin intends to put forward a bill to the supporters of the former candidate for the Mayor of Astrakhan Oleg Shein for the damage caused to the city during their action on April 14.

"It's unpleasant for me to talk about trampled lawns, broken street lamps; they even didn't realize that they hovered on the burial in the Brothers' Garden, climbing on the monument to fallen Red Guards. 180 persons are buried there. Even the 'wild' democrats of the dashing 1990s didn't behave like that. We'll surely invoice the damage to the organizers," Governor Zhilkin wrote in his blog in the LiveJournal.

The Governor has posted also several incriminating photos, depicting oppositionists on the monument. According to his story, now townspeople will have to go to subbotnik and clear the traces of the violent days in Astrakhan, the "Argumenty.ru" writes.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan

Ayats (verses) of the Koran, references to which were left by attackers at a synagogue in Derbent, are interpreted by the extremists to justify their confrontation with Jews and Christians, Leonid Syukiyainen and Dmitry Mikulsky point out. The experts suggest that the date of the attack on the Orthodox temple was chosen by the militants because of the Christian holiday celebrated on that day.
