During a spontaneous gathering residents of Sochi demanded to prohibit construction of a power plant in Kudepsta

On May, 21, a spontaneous gathering was held by residents of Kudepsta neighbourhood on the left bank of the Kudepsta river. About one hundred people took part in it. The citizens demanded to stop construction of Kudepsta thermal power plant (TPP) and organized watching in order not to let the developers into the building site of the plant.

In April of 2011, public hearings on the project of construction of Kudepsta TPP were held. Then the arguments of the project’s authors did not satisfy the citizens and they suggested to relocate the power plant to another district.

In spite of the townsmen’s position, the investor took a decision to build the TPP in Kudepsta district, the participants of the spontaneous gathering state.

According to them, the attempt of building the power plant was suppressed by joint efforts of the officials and community. “People will set up a camp on the left bank of the Kudepsta and organize watching not to let the developers into the territory meant for health resort purposes”, Anatoly Makhovsky, Chairman of the Council of Kudepsta local self-government, says.

A picket of volunteers is presently placed on the building site and lists of day and night watching made out.

Construction of Kudepsta TPP is included into the program of preparation for winter Olympic Games of 2014 in Sochi. Three new TPPs are under construction for the needs of the health resort as well as for the winter Olympiad in this energy gap district. The Kudepsta one is the most debatable of them for the reason of its location very close to a dwelling microdistrict.
