FSIN Department denies oppressions of Dagestani resident in colony

The Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) of the Russian Federation in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District does not confirm the information that Shamil Gaziev, a resident of Makhachkala, who was sentenced for 24 years of imprisonment for committing a terror act, is persecuted on religious and ethnic grounds.

According to the father of Shamil Gaziev, his son faces obstacles for his committing of prayer and gets no proper medical care. As of June 10, according to the father, the situation has not changed for the better.

Gazimagomed Gaziev appealed to the Russian FSIN Department and to the Ombudsman of the Russian Federation in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District with a complaint against the actions of the colony personnel. According to his story, his son is still under pressure, "the colony officials constantly find reasons for his persecution, and everything is done to accuse him of anything and send him as a punishment to the punishment ward."

Moreover, according to the father of the convicted man, he is not allowed to be visited by his family members, although visits of relatives are to be allowed for persons serving their sentences in colonies, "including high security colonies."

Meanwhile, the Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) of the Russian Federation in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District does not confirm the information that the prisoner Shamil Gaziev is persecuted on religious and ethnic grounds.

A FSIN staff member told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that all prisoners serve their sentences in accordance with the Criminal and Correctional Code and that "all complaints from prisoners were checked; however, in most cases, they were not confirmed."

According to the source, on May 30, the penitentiary institution No. 8, where Shamil Gaziev serves his sentence, was visited by Andrei Petrov, Deputy Prosecutor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, and Andrei Aristov, Junior Counselor of Justice, Acting Yamal-Nenets Prosecutor for supervision on law compliance in penitentiary institutions.

"In the presence of representatives of the FSIN Department and the administration of the colony, they visited facilities of the punishment ward, facilities of ward type, isolation ward, the unit No. 11 (SUON), units of the living area, canteen of the living area, and facilities of the unit No. 12 for convicts of the settlement colony. No violations were revealed," the staff member of the FSIN Department has concluded.
