Picket against inhumane treatment of animals held in Sochi

In Sochi, animal lovers, ecologists and members of the public charitable organization "Dobromir" held a rally in support of homeless animals. The action brought together about 50 people.

The picket was accompanied by posters reading: "Stop killing animals!", "No to shooting, yes to sterilization!" "Photographing with animals is cruel and dangerous!", "Photo business ruins lives of animals and can ruin yours!", "Dogs are not trash!", "Sochi budget pays 850 roubles for capture and killing of one animal!", "Slaughterers – to jail!" and "Everyone needs a home!"

"Unfortunately, the Olympic capital reveals wild attitude to domestic animals," said Anna Vechkaeva, the head of the charitable organization "Dobromir", adding that animals are killed in the eyes of passers-by, including children.

During the picket, activists collected signatures to the statement addressed to the head of the city with a request to set up a city programme for the humane attitude to regulation of the population of homeless animals, prohibit killing animals under the pretext of sanitation of Sochi, and establish the post of the defender of animals' rights in the city administration.

During the action the statement was signed by about 500 people.

In his turn, an employee of the department for housing and utilities of the Tsentralny District of Sochi told the correspondent that the situation with pets in Sochi had gone out of control; and citizens are often attacked by homeless dogs and cats.
