Azerbaijan: activist of "Kura" Society reports attempted attack on him

In the city of Imishli, in south-western Azerbaijan, an attack was committed on Makhbub Zulfugarly, a local activist of the "Kura" Society.

Zulfugarly states that a local began insulting him with obscene words, for no reason, and tried to hit him.

"He demanded that I stop complaining about local officials to higher authorities. When the noise attracted people, he disappeared," Zulfugarly told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, adding that the attacker has links with local authorities.

Zulfugarly filed an application to the Imishli ROVD (District Interior Division) and asked to take measures to prevent such provocations in the future.

"Zulfugarly defended the rights of those citizens who were unable to obtain compensations or received small compensations for the damage they suffered from the flood. He also attracts the attention of the media to arbitrariness of local bureaucrats and writes about it to central bodies of power," said Oktay Gulaliyev, the coordinator of the office of the "Kura" Civil Society.

He added that an essential part of over 500 million US dollars allocated by the government for liquidation of the flood consequences was appropriated by officials.
