Azerbaijani CoA upholds verdict to Intigam Aliev

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (CoA) has upheld the verdict to rights defender Intigam Aliev in the case of his tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurship, and a large-scale misappropriation or embezzlement. The defence intends to appeal against the verdict.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 22, the court in Baku found Intigam Aliev, the head of the non-profit organization (NPO) "Society of Legal Education", guilty of tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurial activities, misappropriation or embezzlement on a large scale and sentenced him to 7.5 years of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony.

One of the Aliev's advocates has stated the defence's disagreement with CoA verdict and the intention to lodge an appeal complaint to the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan; and Intigam Aliev himself has treated the consideration of the above appeal as "a farce", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"It's impossible to expect any fair decision in the country, where the judiciary fails to ensure minimum standards of the defence," said Intigam Aliev.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
