Elena Kostyuchenko awarded Sakharov Prize in Journalism
Elena Kostyuchenko, a special correspondent of the "Novaya Gazeta", has become the winner of the Andrei Sakharov Prize "For Journalism as a Deed" in 2015. In her materials, Elena Kostyuchenko often highlights problems of residents of the southern regions of Russia.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this year, the Andrei Sakharov Prize "For Journalism as a Deed" is awarded for the 15th time. The awarding ceremony takes place every year on December 15 to mark the Memorial Day of journalists who died while performing their professional duties.
The number of recent Elena Kostyuchenko's materials published in the "Novaya Gazeta" includes a story of Anton Sachkov, an orphan from the Krasnodar Territory, who was accused of murder, but thrice acquitted. Anton Sachkov was defended by Alexander Popkov, an advocate from the human rights organization "Agora". He has announced his intention to seek the rehabilitation of his client and the prosecution of those persons who falsified evidence in the case.
In March 2015, the book of materials "We Live Here" was published with Elena Kostyuchenko's materials, including the reports from the Cossack village of Kuschevskaya, the Rostov hospital, and the village of Akhtyrsky of the Abinsk District of the Krasnodar Territory.
Let us remind you that in 2014, Igor Tsagoev, a journalist from Nalchik, became a laureate of the Andrei Sakharov Prize "Journalism as a Deed".
