Resident of Azerbaijan tries to burn himself in front of school

Ali Navruzov, a 63-year-old resident of the town of Neftchala, has committed a self-immolation attempt because of his debts. According to his colleagues, Ali Navruzov claimed that he was not able to pay his bank loans. The incident occurred in front of the school where the man worked as a technician.

Ali Navruzov has survived. At present, he stays in the hospital, and physicians estimate his condition as stable.

The colleagues of the man associate the incident with his severe financial situation, aggravated after the depreciation of the national currency, the Azerbaijani Service of the Radio Liberty reports.

Let us remind you that on December 21, 2015, the Central Bank of Azerbaijan introduced a floating exchange rate for manat. Such an introduction was explained by the sharp fall in oil prices. On the same day, the manat has depreciated against the US dollar and the euro by almost a half. The depreciation has resulted in restriction of banking operations in Baku; operation of the stores was suspended, and foreign currency exchange points were closed.
