KChR residents suggest erecting a monument Karachay hundred of "Wild Division"
They plan to build a monument, in the village of Uchkeken of the Malokarachay District of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR), to the Karachay hundred, which made a part of the Caucasian Cavalry Division during the First World War. The monument is expected to be opened before the end of the year.
The Caucasian Cavalry Division, better known as the "Wild Division", was created in 1914. It was formed as a part of the Russian Army from volunteering Muslims, natives of the Caucasus and Transcaucasia, who were not subject to military conscription.
The initiative to build the monument belongs to local residents, Asiyat Gnaeva, the deputy head of the district administration, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to her story, they have already prepared the list of soldiers and officers of the Karachay hundred of the regiment of the "Wild Division"; many of them were decorated by highest awards. She has added that Cossacks, Abazins, Nogais and other nationals of Northern Caucasus also fought in the division.
The "Wild Division" is a very important historical example for the modern society, said Alibek Uzdenov, the head of the KChR's regional public youth organization "As-Alan". According to his story, today it is necessary to recollect the events of the past.
The fact of commemorating the "Wild Division" is of great importance for the republic, said Akhmat Ebzeev, Chairman of the Committee for National Policy, External Relations, Local Self-Government and Non-Profit Organizations of the KChR's Parliament.
