Intigam Aliev decides to continue his human rights activities
Despite the repression, the Azerbaijani civil society continues struggling for democracy, Intigam Aliev, an Azerbaijani rights defender, has stated after his release from colony.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today the court has ruled to replace the real prison term of Intigam Aliev, the head of the organization "Society of Legal Education", for the conditional one.
On April 22, 2014, the court sentenced Intigam Aliev, the leader of the organization "Legal Education Society", to 7.5 years of imprisonment on charges of embezzlement on a large scale and tax evasion. On February 24, 2016, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan upheld the verdict. On March 24, the advocate reported that the General Prosecutor of Azerbaijan had treated the court's decision as "too severe" and filed to the Azerbaijani SC an appeal against the verdict.
After his release from the colony, the Azerbaijani human rights activist Intigam Aliev did not come out to his supporters, but was evacuated secretly from his advocates and relatives.
At about 8:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. Moscow time), the rights defender was brought home to the settlement of Saray, located near the city of Sumgait, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
The rights defender was met by his family members, relatives, journalists and activists. They applauded to Intigam Aliev. When asked about his attitude to the court decision, Aliev said that he was "experiencing mixed feelings."
"But now I don't want to talk about the decision of the SC's Plenum. Of course, I am happy to be free. It is really unfair to 'rest' at this time, my friends continue working in adverse conditions. Once again, I'll take a part of the burden on my shoulders and continue working," Intigam Aliev said in his interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
