Opposition criticizes Armenian President for his position on Nagorno-Karabakh
The opposition has criticized the statement made by Serzh Sargsyan after the Armenian-Azerbaijani meeting held in Vienna. Oppositionists have called on to return the territories of the buffer zone, lost during the April escalation of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 16, Vienna hosted a meeting of Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliev with engagement of Foreign Ministers of the countries co-chairing the OSCE Minsk Group. The Presidents have reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
Serzh Sargsyan has stated that 800 hectares of land lost in April comprise only one-thousandth part of the buffer zone and have no strategic importance. According to the Armenian President, the return of those territories is not worth the expected loss and Armenia will not initiate hostilities, the "Panarmenian.net" reports.
Zaruhi Postandjyan, an MP from the opposition "Heritage" Party, has condemned the position voiced by the Armenian President and called on to start an offensive operation to return the lost land, the "lragir.am" reports.
According to Zaruhi Postandjyan, the reduction of the buffer zone has resulted in problems of security for a number of villages, in particular, Talysh and Martakert.
It is immoral to declare the territories lost during the four-day war as unnecessary. This opinion was voiced by David Sanasaryan, a member of the civil initiative "Liberation of Lost Territories".
In his turn, Zhirair Sefilyan, the leader of the movement "100 years without regime", has announced his willingness to lead the operation to liberate the lost territories by the forces of the "Association of liberators of Shushi special battalion".
