Azerbaijan condemns Germany's recognition of Armenian Genocide
The Azeri Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIA) has treated the resolution on the Armenian Genocide adopted by the German Bundestag as biased and accused German MPs of "double standards" at the background of "the German indifference to Armenia's ethnic cleansings in Nagorno-Karabakh."
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 2 the German Parliament approved the resolution "101 years of memory of genocide of Armenians and other Christian minorities". It treats the recognition of the tragic events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire – the deportation and mass killings of Armenians – as genocide, as well as the recognition by Germany of its part of responsibility for these events. Experts have treated the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Berlin as a political step.
Khikmet Gadjiev, the official spokesman of the Azerbaijani MFA, called the Bundestag's decision "an example of double standards", noting that the German MPs "exhibit indifference" to Armenia's aggression in "occupied territories of Azerbaijan."
The resolution of the Bundestag is "a tool of informational pressure on Ankara," said Rasim Musabekov, a political analyst and a member of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Azerbaijan. However, Turkey is quite a strong state, which cannot be forced to change its line by such measures, he said.
The Bundestag's decision was a one-sided one, without regard to the Turkish view of the problem, said Tofig Tyurkel, an observer of the website "Contact.az".
