Bairam Mamedov and Giyas Ibragimov not allowed to be visited by relatives, their advocate asserts

The forensic examination has found out that Bairam Mamedov and Giyas Ibragimov do not use drugs. This was reported by their advocate Elchin Sadygov. The defender has also claimed that the activists' rights are still being violated in SIZO (pre-trial prison).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 10, Giyas Ibragimov, a Facebook user, and Bairam Mamedov, an activist of the movement "Nida", were detained in Baku on charges of drug trafficking. According to members of the movement "Nida", Bairam Mamedov and Giyas Ibragimov were detained after the appearance of graffiti on the monument to Geidar Aliev in Baku. According to the defender, both activists plead not guilty and claim that they testified under torture. The international human rights organization "Amnesty International" (AI) has recognized them "prisoners of conscience".

Photos of the monument of Geidar Aliev in the park in central Baku with inscriptions on its pedestal were disseminated on May 10 in social networks on the Internet and some online editions. The inscription in the Azerbaijani language read: "Qul bayramınız mübarək!" (Congratulations on the slaves' holiday!). This was wordplay with the phrase "Congratulations on the Day of Flowers!" This day is marked annually on May 10, the birthday of former president Geidar Aliev. On the other side of the pedestal, it was written in English: "Fuck the system!" Later, the inscriptions were erased.

On July 20, advocate Elchin Sadygov visited young people at the Baku SIZO-1.

"Their rights are still being violated. By law they have the right for one meeting with their family members a week. For more than two months of detention at the SIZO, Giyas Ibragimov was only twice allowed to be visited by his family members. And Bairam Mamedov was never allowed to meet his parents. This is a gross violation of the rights of the arrested people," Elchin Sadygov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The advocate has also reported that the young men had underwent the drug examination.

"The drug examination has confirmed that the young men are not drug users," continued Elchin Sadygov.

Meanwhile, the advocate has noted that the examination results do not mean confirmation of innocence of the young men.
