Prosecutor's Office instructed to check information about female circumcision in Dagestan

The Prosecutor's Office for Dagestan has been instructed to check the information about the practice of female circumcision in Dagestan. This was reported by the Deputy General Prosecutor of Russia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in August, Diana Gurtskaya, the chair of the commission to support families, children and motherhood of the Public Chamber, appealed to Yuri Chaika, Russian General Prosecutor, with a request to carry out an inspection.

The request has been associated with the report released by the "Russian Legal Initiative", stating that the practice of female genital mutilation procedures does not simply exist in Dagestan, but is also supported by religious figures.

In his response to the Diana Gurtskaya's letter, Viktor Grin, Russian Deputy General Prosecutor, wrote that the Prosecutor of Dagestan had been instructed to organize inspections to check the information presented in the report released by the "Russian Legal Initiative".

The Prosecutor's Office for Dagestan is to respond quickly to the request and inform the commission chaired by Diana Gurtskaya about the results of the inspection, states the letter, which text is quoted today by the RIA "Novosti".

Let us remind you that on August 19, a draft law was submitted to the State Duma to criminalize procedures of female circumcision.
