Prosecutor's Office fails to confirm information about female circumcision in Dagestan

The Prosecutor's Office has not found any confirmation of the information about the practice of female circumcision in Dagestan. Diana Gurtskaya, a member of the Public Chamber, has announced her intention to appeal to the General Prosecutor's Office with a request to initiate the repeated prosecutors' inspection.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in August, Diana Gurtskaya, the chair of the commission to support families, children and motherhood of the Public Chamber, appealed to Russian General Prosecutor Yuri Chaika with a request to carry out an inspection to check the information about the practice of female circumcision in the territory of Dagestan. The request was associated with the report released by the "Russian Legal Initiative", stating that the practice of female genital mutilation procedures did not simply exist in Dagestan, but was also supported by religious figures.

The Prosecutor's Office of Dagestan has not found any confirmation of the information about the practice of female circumcision in the republic. This was reported by the letter issued by the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office and addressed to Diana Gurtskaya.

"There are no grounds for the prosecutors' intervention," reports the letter of the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office as quoted today by the RIA "Novosti".

According to the RIA "Novosti", Diana Gurtskaya intends to repeatedly appeal to the General Prosecutor's Office. "The answer received from the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office is a vivid example of negligent attitude to the duties entrusted. Today, we will appeal to the General Prosecutor with a request to conduct a professional inspection and not a formal preparation of the report," said Diana Gurtskaya.
