Parliamentary elections were main 2016 event in Georgia
The parliamentary elections were, of course, the most important event in 2016 in Georgia, Gela Vasadze, a political analyst and the chairman of the NGO "Free Zone", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. However, in his opinion, the election process itself has not changed in recent years.
"The elections were held in the best 'post-Soviet' traditions: with fights, scandals, bribing voters, falsifications and so forth, like in any 'normal' post-Soviet country where elections are still held," said the analyst.
However, the election outcomes are different from those held in 2012. This time, the constitutional majority was won not by the coalition "Georgian Dream", but one party, albeit with the same name.
This year's parliamentary elections are particularly significant given the fact that now the party in power is going to attempt to amend the Constitution, and, having now won the majority in the parliament, has all chances to achieve their aim, Nika Chitadze, Professor of the Black Sea University and a political scientist, said in his turn.
"The fact that the 'Georgian Dream' has won such powers and a chance to really change the constitutional order was, of course, the event No. 1 in Georgia in 2016," he told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
