"Azadlyg" newspaper reports its staff questioned by GPO

Eight journalists of the paper have been summoned to the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Azerbaijan for interrogation within the case initiated against Faig Amirov, the Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), the "Azadlyg" reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Amirov's advocate Fakhraddin Mekhtiev, who visited his client at SIZO (pre-trial prison) on January 23, stated the deterioration of Amirov’s health.

Faig Amirov was detained on August 20, 2016, on suspicion of kindling the religious hatred. According to investigators, books related to the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen were found on him.

"Azadlyg" is being audited by the tax inspectorate, said Samed Ragimov, another advocate.

According to his story, back in November 2016, within the case against Amirov, the GPO’s Investigating Department on Grave Crimes petitioned to the Nasimi District Court on conducting a tax audit of the activities of the newspaper from 2010 to 2016.

"The GPO motivated its petition by the fact that some financial receipts were found during the search of Amirov’s apartment. However, it has nothing to do with the charges presented to Amirov," said the advocate.
