Azerbaijan refuses to recognize election in South Ossetia

Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijani has announced that the country does not recognize the presidential election and the referendum held in the region on April 9.

"The Azerbaijani Republic does not recognize independence and, accordingly, the so-called election and referendum held on April 9, 2017," reports the announcement issued today by the Azerbaijani MFA.

The announcement emphasizes that the continuation of negotiations is necessary to resolve the South-Ossetian issue in accordance with the norms and principles of international law.

Let us remind you that on the eve of the election in South Ossetia, Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has stated that the European Union supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and does not recognize the election and referendum scheduled in South Ossetia for April 9.
