Ancient necropolis discovered in Azerbaijan

A necropolis found in the area of Gegeli in the Shemakha District has been named the Damirchinsky necropolis in honour of the village in which territory it was discovered.

The necropolis has been discovered by accident when workers were laying a roadway. On May 27, the expedition led by Professor Gafar Djabiev on the initiative of the public association for assistance in studying the cultural heritage of MIRAS completed excavations on the territory of more than 600 square meters. Stone graves were discovered at the depth of 50-80 centimetres, the "oxu.az" reports.

Samples of glass and metal items were found in the graves. Besides, a silver bowl was discovered near the head of one of the skeletons.

In one of the bowls, researchers have discovered the remains of fabric, which are the oldest sample of textile products, found in Azerbaijan as a result of excavations, the "APA" reports.

Researchers believe that the monument was constructed in the 3rd-4th centuries BC.
