PFPA member Fizuli Guseinov arrested in Azerbaijan

Fizuli Guseinov has been sentenced to 10 days of arrest for failure to obey to the police. This was reported by the Sabail District Court. Fizuli Guseinov is being persecuted for political reasons, since he tried to hold a picket in support of Giyas Ibragimov, claimed Ilham Gusein, the leader of the youth committee for the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 25, 2016, the court sentenced Giyas Ibragimov to 10 years of imprisonment on the charge of illicit drug trafficking. Giyas Ibragimov treats his sentence as a revenge for graffiti on the pedestal of the monument to Heydar Aliev. On July 8, the mother of Ilyas Ibragimov reported that her son had been subjected to beating in a penal colony.

"Fizuli Guseinov was detained on July 9, when he was going to hold a solo picket in the centre of Baku. And earlier, he had been already detained for holding such actions in defence of the political prisoners' rights," said Ilham Gusein.

According to him, on July 10, Fizuli Guseinov was brought to trial. The trial was held behind closed doors, and the activist's case was considered with the presence of a hired advocate or even without any advocate at all.

Ilham Gusein has added that the PFPA intends to involve an independent advocate to protect the Fizuli Guseinov's rights and appeal against his arrest.

Let us remind you that on June 19, in Baku, Fizuli Guseinov went to a solo picket with the slogan reading: "Freedom to Political Prisoners!"
