Sailors detained in Libya appeal to Georgian authorities for help

Three Georgian sailors detained in Tripoli on August 30 have complained of inhuman treatment and insanitary conditions at the detention facility.

The Georgian sailors with other crew members were detained in the waters of Libya on suspicion of transporting illegal cargo. Their ship was under the flag of Tanzania.

According to the preliminary information, in total, 11 crew members were detained, and they were placed to a temporary detention facility. The sailors claim that so far, since August 30, they are provided with no advocate or interpreter, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel reports.

"The sailors were visited by foreign advocates who did not know understandable languages, even English, to explain them anything. They do not have any help there. They have no food and no water. My son says: 'A host does not treat a dog like they threat us,'," the "Sputnik-Georgia" quotes today Nanu Khokhba, the mother of a sailor, as saying.

The detainees state that the Consulate of Georgia has not yet rendered any assistance to them. They have also added that the interpreter does not understand any of four languages they know, the "Vestnik Kavkaza" reports today.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan
