Activists regret about poor attendance of Nogais’ Remembrance and Sorrow Day

On October 1, about 120 members of the Nogai communities of Moscow and Novy Urengoy took part in the Remembrance and Sorrow Day. After the battle on October 1, 1783, and tsarist raids, Nogai people were scattered; many of them were killed, said Ramil Ishmukhambetov, a historian. Now, the Nogais, as they say, are also disunited and cannot manage their own lands.

The commemoration actions have been held by Nogais for three years, Eduard Sheshenov, an activist of the Nogai Youth Union, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The above Ramil Ishmukhambetov, a post-graduate student of the History Department of the Astrakhan State University, the author of scientific publications on the history of the Nogai nation, has added that Nogais have also political problems.

"Our people are poorly, if at all, represented in power bodies of Dagestan, Chechnya and Stavropol Territory... A bit better situation is in Karachay-Cherkessia... For Nogais of all regions, migration to the north, caused by unemployment, is a great problem," the historian has concluded.

The Nogais’ dissatisfaction is mostly caused by the fact that many lands of the Nogai District of Dagestan are not in their management, said Eradil Tengizov, Vice-President of the Federal National-Cultural Autonomy of Russian Nogais.

According to his story, due to difficulties in agriculture, the profitability of animal husbandry – the Nogais’ main business – continues falling down.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan

Ayats (verses) of the Koran, references to which were left by attackers at a synagogue in Derbent, are interpreted by the extremists to justify their confrontation with Jews and Christians, Leonid Syukiyainen and Dmitry Mikulsky point out. The experts suggest that the date of the attack on the Orthodox temple was chosen by the militants because of the Christian holiday celebrated on that day.
