Six opposition activists arrested in Baku

The Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) has treated the arrests of its activists, detained on the eve of the rally held in Baku on October 7, as politically motivated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 7 more than a thousand people went out to an anti-corruption rally in Baku under the slogan "No to robbery!" It was organized by the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF).

On the eve of the rally, more than 100 opposition activists were summoned to the police, where they were told to refuse to participate in the rally, Irada Nariman, a member of the PFPA’s Presidium of the Supreme Mejlis and of the NCDF, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Six most active members of our party, who were in charge for coordinating the rally, were detained. Later, on October 6, we learned that they were sentence to administrative arrests for 10-30 days," Ms Nariman said, adding that there was no reliable information about the formal charges put forward against them.

"It’s obvious that our activists had been arrested on trumped-up charges; the same happened before the September 23 rally," Irada Nariman said.
