Journalists associate growth of protests in Dagestan with Vasiliev's appointment
In Dagestan, the growth of public activities can be explained by the people's attempts to attract the attention of Vladimir Vasiliev, the new head of the republic. This opinion has been expressed by Magomed Magomedov, a political commentator of the newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft). Besides, the growth of the people's activities is also affected by the pre-election period, which people try to use to solve their problems, believes Milrad Fatullaev, the editor-in-chief of the agency "Derbent".
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 3, the Russian President appointed Vladimir Vasiliev the acting leader of Dagestan. On November 13, fire victims from the Mokok village, who claimed compensation for their houses, destroyed the fire in 2016, held an action and demanded a meeting with Vladimir Vasiliev. However, they were refused. 13 people were detained, and on November 14, the court pronounced against them a warning about violation of the procedure for holding a public event.
Rukiyat Ramazanova, a former resident of the Mokok village, has reported that the fire victims live in abandoned or unfinished houses or barns without minimum amenities.
The republic faces not an increase in protest activity, but an increase in the number of actions held in an attempt to draw the attention of the new Dagestani leader to people's problems, noted Magomed Magomedov. The people's demands are related to domestic problems, including lack of supply of gas, water, and heat, and payment of compensation for destroyed housing and lost property.
The new leader of the republic still has a certain credibility of the population, Magomed Magomedov believes.
