Teenager detained for desecrating memorial in Kizlyar

On January 25, inscriptions on the memorial in memory of the victims of militants' attack on Kizlyar were made by a teenager from a problematic family, law enforcers have reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 25, unidentified vandals made inscriptions and wrote symbols on the memorial to the victims of militants' attack on Kizlyar, and put a dead crow amidst flowers.

On January 9, 1996, Chechen militants attacked a helicopter base and a military town in Kizlyar, and took about 3000 hostages in the hospital. As a result, about 70 people were killed; more than 100 others were wounded. Every year, on January 9, mourning events are held in Kizlyar in memory of the victims.

According to the Kizlyar police, the inscriptions on the memorial were made by a 15-year-old teenager from a problematic large family; the boy is registered at the commission for minors' affairs.

"He could not explain the motive for his actions," the Mayoralty's website reports.
